How Old Must My Child Be To Start Judo?
Let me try to answer the question of how old my child needs to be to start Judo by answering, there is no specific age to start Judo. There is no reason why a child could not start at practically any age as long as they are able to concentrate on the lesson and participate in class. About 4 or more often 5 or 6 is usually the youngest. It depends on if the child is ready and if you are not sure you should do a trial class.

For example, I have had a student start as young as 4 years of age and I regularly get teenagers starting. I have found, however, that most 4-year-olds are not ready for Judo. Don't get me wrong, they love to come but their development, attention span and interest are often not aligned with the classes.
In contrast, 5 year old's usually are ready and often super enthusiastic to start Judo. Six (6) year old's all the way through to teenagers are often even more so.
In the end, it is not a matter of how old my child needs to be to start Judo but does your child’s interests are a good fit for doing Judo. So the question should really be:
how do I know if Judo is for my child?
There is of course only one way for you and your child to discover if Judo is a good fit for them and that is to go along and try. Most Judo Clubs and Schools have a trial class [Link] and you and your child should go along to that class and find out if Judo is something that they like to do.
