Is Judo Good For 5-Year-Olds?
Five is a great age to start Judo. Whilst it doesn't suit every 5-year-old, most approach it with great enthusiasm. Lots of kids love Judo and 5-year-olds are no exception.

I guess I have to ask what is behind this question? You see, if you are asking,
“is Judo healthy for 5-year-olds”?
then I would refer you to my article on Kid's Judo [Link] because in it I outline a significant number of benefits for kids of all ages, including 5-year-olds.
If you are asking,
“is Judo safe for 5-year-olds”?
then I would answer by saying that in the first few minutes of the 5-year-old stepping on the mat just as with every other Judo student, they are taught and practice falling and rolling correctly. They quickly learn about spacial awareness and that they should avoid running into each other. They learn to bow so that they start to understand respect for each other and the mat.
Built into the very nature of Judo is looking after each other because we want our partners to come back so that we can continue learning from them and practising with them.
Is Judo good for 5 year old's? I think it is. In fact, there is a very real sense in which I think they are the model as I think it is good for everybody who is willing to approach it as enthusiastically as a 5-year-old.
